Another outstanding post . . .

by Pr. Reed here.  An excerpt, to whet your appetite:

Can anyone imagine Luther clowning around in the pulpit or prancing around in the house of God? Can anyone imagine Bach’s music inspired by anything less than the glory of the Gospel? Can anyone envisage C.F.W. Walther or any of our Lutheran forefathers tolerating doctrinally questionable, insipidly shallow and repetitive ditties in worship when great hymns with theological meat on their bones are available?

Currently we here in South Wisconsin are facing the decline of our sustaining congregations to support our three Lutheran High Schools. It is all about money. One of the three are members of the Milwaukee School Choice program. A government program to combat the inefficiency of the local MPS, Milwaukee Public School lack of education. 60% of MPS Students do not graduate High School, School Choice allows Milwaukee Schools to enroll and pay $6400.00 for each student. These funds can only be used for salaries and supplies. There is absolutely no accountability to those of us who have built and supported these schools over the past 60 years. Tuition for those who do not qualify fir Choice is somewhere between $5,000 and $7,000 per year. Our traditional Lutheran Parochial Elementary schools are dying. Oh, Yes, we do have outreach, but at what fundamental cost. Parochial used to have a meaning. We all subscribed to and fostered a like attitude. Yes, we were certainly exclusive. If you did not like our theology you had a "Choice". Now the "Choice" is we will have "Praise Choirs" and "Contemporary" service, we have had two new hymnals, in 15 years, and now the New Lutheran Study Bible. We no longer have "Voter's Meetings", we now have hand-picked officers for the "Mission and Ministry Council", fortunately, I have an out. I am 18 years old, Psalm 90-vs, 10-20. Go with God.

errata, Grandpa Harry is 81 not 18. These old fingers do not work as well as they did when I was a Linotype operator back in the 60's.

Thanks for sharing, Grandpa Harry. It is sad what is happening to our schools these days. While our parish doesn't have a school, there are some in our circuit who do and they are struggling big time. I often wonder how much of an impact our flirtation with "contemporary" formats of "worship" has had on our schools. It seems that the less and less we have taken seriously our distinctively Lutheran doctrine, the more trouble we've experienced all around. Who knows? Only God. Come, Lord Jesus. Amen.
