All Guts, All Glory!

Sparty tops the Irish on one of the gutsiest calls you'll ever witness!  After an exciting back-and-forth game in which both defenses took most of the night off, the Spartans pull "Little Giants" out of the playbook to put the game away in the first OT.  "Little Giants" is the name of the fake field goal the Spartans opted for in lieu of a 46-yard field goal attempt, which could have sent the game into a second OT.  What a gutsy call!  And it was executed to perfection.  Notre Dame was caught completely off guard and Sparty made the play look rather easy.  Believe it or not, right before the play was run, I thought to myself, "We should run a fake and try to win the game right here, or at least pick up a first down and keep the drive alive."  And, lo and behold, that's exactly what I watched transpire before my eyes, to my utter amazement!  Wow!  Great call.  Great win.  Now it's time to work on our pass defense, which is miserably dismal right now.  The offense, special teams, and run defense are looking solid, but the pass defense leaves much to be desired.  If we're going to contend in the Big Ten, it needs to get fixed in a hurry.  Of course, I'm sure Dantonio and company are well aware of that fact and will be doing their best to improve in that area.

The best thing was watching the reaction of Brian Kelly, Notre Dame's head coach (former CMU coach), after the play that lost his team the game.  All he could do was smile in appreciation of the gutsy call.

If you missed the exciting finish, you can go here to watch a video recap.

Way to go Sparty!

Oh, and by the way, in a comment to Logan a few posts back (the post about "Together in the Word"), I predicted the Spartans to win 34-24 (the final score was actually 34-31).  Not bad, eh? :)
